There's nothing better than a long shower at the end of an even longer day. And what's a shower without ten different types of exfoliators, washes, cleansers, and treatments to accompany it?
If your shower caddy isn't so filled with crap that bottles routinely come raining out of it like grenades, then you're not doing showers right. But are you completing your shower routine with the most important ritual of all?
Even with all that work you do while you're taking a shower, moisturizing after you're done is the most important thing that you can do for your skin. This isn't just some preference- there's literal science behind it.
In the first minutes where you step out of the shower, water is evaporating off of your skin very quickly because of osmosis- basically, there's more water in your skin than the air, so the water wants to move towards the empty space in the air. As a result, if you don't moisturize, your skin gets crazy dry from all of the water leaving it.
Moisturizing your skin immediately after taking a shower locks the water into your skin, keeping it from getting flaky and dry.
Bad things happen if you don't practice this ritual, dermatologist Dendy Engelman told Refinery 29:
"Dry skin doesn't function optimally because the barrier function is compromised, leaving the skin sensitive and unbalanced...[Exfoliation] helps your moisturizer to penetrate deeply into the skin, locking in natural oils, and aiding in repairing. Depending on the ingredients of the lotion you use, applying it over cracked, dry skin can cause burning and inflammation."
Burning and inflammation! Loss of natural oils! Cracked, dry skin! Are you convinced that you should be moisturizing after every shower yet?
The most common post-shower moisturizer move is to throw on some lotion over all of the areas you've shaved and to leave everything else to fend for itself. But it's important to remember to moisturize places like your chest, your face, your hands, and any other place on your body with sensitive or overworked skin.
The next step will be standing in a drugstore staring at about fifty different moisturizers to pick from. May the odds be ever in your favor.
