If You Haven't Tried Golden Milk Before, You're Seriously Missing Out

If you've never heard of golden milk before (and no, it has nothing to do with golden showers, because ew) , then you are seriously missing out. Golden milk is the incredible warm beverage that allows you to get your daily helping of turmeric every single day, without any trouble at all.

In the last year, we've seen the rise of a new superfood: the spice turmeric, which is known for its amazing health properties, not to mention its absolutely stunning yellow-orange color. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, an antioxidant, and can encourage long term brain health as well as joint health. Oh, and it's also an amazing color for the walls of your bedroom.

For thousands of years, cultures have been using turmeric as a spice in recipes. If you love curry, then you've been ingesting turmeric for years, as it's an essential spice to any curry recipe.

But only recently has turmeric become popular in mainstream culture, with golden milk showing up on Instagram feeds across the world. It's available for purchase in the coffee scene (hello, Starbucks) as well as the health junkie scene (Pressed Juicery offers a cold version).

If you want to reap the benefits of turmeric, but don't feel like dropping cash on it, you can make it at home out of a small collection of simple ingredients.

Traditionally, golden milk is comprised of two essential ingredients: coconut milk and turmeric. Other recipes offer opportunities to spice it up with additions like pepper, maple syrup, honey, ginger and more, which is why golden milk is so versatile: you can optimize the flavor based on of what you love.

For an amazing but simple golden milk recipe, try this one from Dr. Weil:

  • Heat 2 cups light, unsweetened coconut milk (or almond or soymilk)
  • Add 1/2 tablespoon peeled, grated fresh ginger
  • Add 1 tablespoon peeled, grated fresh turmeric
  • Add 3-4 black peppercorns
  • Heat all ingredients in a saucepan
  • Stir well
  • Bring to a simmer and simmer covered for 10 minutes.
  • Strain and sweeten to taste (if desired).

Enjoy it every evening. Congratulations, you're now going to live forever!
